The Wet Food Lie: What the Can Actually Says

"Complete and balanced." That phrase is on every can. It means almost nothing.

I compared 20 wet food brands last month. Not because I wanted to. Because a client brought in three different cans and asked which one was best. I had no idea. So I spent three evenings reading labels and running numbers.

The winner surprised me. It was not the expensive one.

Here is what I learned.

The "complete and balanced" claim just means the food meets AAFCO minimums for a nutrient profile. It does not mean the food is good. It does not mean your cat will thrive. It means the food will keep a cat alive in a lab setting. That is a low bar.

Brand A: $3.20 per can. 78 kcal. Fancy marketing, "human-grade ingredients."
Brand B: $1.40 per can. 95 kcal. Boring label, no Instagram presence.
Brand C: $2.80 per can. 62 kcal. "Grain-free," "limited ingredient."

Brand B won. More calories per dollar. Better protein-to-carb ratio. No filler ingredients I couldn't pronounce. The cat eating it? Shiny coat, healthy weight, no vomiting.

The expensive one? The cat lost weight because the calories were too low for the price. The owner was feeding two cans thinking one was enough. She was basically paying for water and marketing.

I should mention โ€” this is not a brand review article. I am not naming brands because formulas change and I do not want to endorse something that gets reformulated next quarter. The point is: read the calorie content. Do the math. The pretty can is not always the right can.

Also, dry food does not clean teeth. Stop saying that. It is a myth. I have extracted teeth from cats who ate nothing but dry food for 15 years. I have seen pristine teeth on cats who ate only wet. Correlation is not causation and the veterinary dental community has been trying to kill this myth for decades.

Anyway. Check the calories. That is the point. Use the calculator if you do not want to do the math yourself.
