Frequently Asked Questions

Is this calculator accurate for all cats?

It uses the standard veterinary RER formula. But every cat is different. A Maine Coon needs more than a Singapura. Use this as a starting point, then adjust based on body condition. If your cat is losing or gaining weight unexpectedly, see a vet.

My cat is overweight. Should I feed the "obese" amount immediately?

No! Cut back gradually โ€” about 10% per week. Cats are dramatic about food changes. Sudden drops lead to begging, stealing, and that judgmental stare they perfected over thousands of years. Use our Weight Tracker to monitor progress.

Do treats count toward daily calories?

Absolutely. Those "just one" treats add up. A single Temptation is about 2 kcal. Twenty treats = 40 kcal. That's 20% of a small cat's daily need. Either subtract from meals or switch to low-cal options. We built a calculator that accounts for this.

How do I know if my cat is the right weight?

Run your hands along their ribs. You should feel them easily, like a keyboard under a thin blanket. If you need to press hard, they are overweight. If ribs are visible, they are underweight. Try our Body Condition Score tool for a full assessment.

Can I use this for dogs?

Technically no โ€” dogs have different metabolic needs. But the math is similar. We focus on cats because they are obligate carnivores with unique requirements. Check out our sister site for dog tools.

Where is my data stored?

Nowhere but your browser. We use localStorage to save your cat's profiles and weight history. It never leaves your device. We don't have a server, database, or user accounts. See our Privacy Policy.
